Katie Taylor, Savannah Marshall Make Women's Boxing History: Fan Take

May 20th, 2012

Irish boxing legend Katie Taylor successfully defended her title at the Women’s World Championships in Qinhuangdao, China May 19 in a rematch with Russian Sofya Ochigava. The gold medal bout of the World’s lightweight division could be a glimpse of what’s to come in London this summer.

The 2012 London Olympics will be the first ever with women’s boxing as an event. There will only be three weight classes in the Olympics versus 10 at the Worlds. If things go as expected and women’s boxing turns out to be a very successful event at the Summer Games, look for more at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Taylor and Ochigava were even after the first two sessions of the four-round fight at 4-4. In the third Taylor began to pull away, ending at 8-6 before closing things out with a strong fourth-round. The point tally when the fight was finished favored Taylor, 11-7. For Taylor, it’s her fourth AIBA World title in a row.

Marshall makes history for Britain

Middleweight Savannah Marshall claimed the first-ever gold medal for a female boxer from Britain when she defeated Elena Vystropova in a hard-fought bout that scored out at 17-15. Marshall made herself a legitimate contender for Olympic gold by taking a tough road through the worlds that saw her take out top contenders.

Marshall downed previously unbeaten Claressa Shields from the United States, European champion Lotte Lien of Norway, China’s AIBA world champion Li Jinzi and another AIBA world champion in the person of Russian Nadezhda Torlopova on the way to the final.

Marshall turned 21 on the same day she won the gold medal at Worlds. Shields, a 17-year-old from Flint, Michigan was still able to fulfill her dream and make the Olympic team.

European silver medalist Maria Badulina, from Ukraine, eliminated Netherlands’ Marichelle De Jong in the welterweight semis before facing United States national champion Raquel Miller. After an even start, Badulina took charge of the bout on the way to a 14-8 gold medal win.

With the buildup to the London Games featuring strong fighters from so many different countries, look for women’s boxing to be a big Olympic event and further the sport.

Jeff Musall has been a fan of good boxing, professional and amateur, since he watched the Thrilla in Manila as a kid years ago. He is looking forward to the Olympics, both men and women’s boxing.

Freddie Roach's role with U.S. Olympic boxing team a mystery

May 17th, 2012

Freddie Roach, the world’s top trainer, signed on a year ago amid great fanfare to lend his expertise to the U.S. Olympic boxing program. Today, there is a question of whether Roach is even a member of the team.

Roach says yes, but USA Boxing officials can’t agree. Gary Pliner, a member of the USA Boxing board of directors, told Yahoo! Sports’ Martin Rogers on Monday that “there is no more involvement” between Roach and the program.

But Anthony Bartkowski, the executive director of USA Boxing, said he is hopeful to keep Roach with the amateur program.

Roach will be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June and is a five-time Trainer of the Year. His addition to the USA Boxing staff as a consultant last year was seen a boost to the country’s sagging amateur boxing program.

But less than three months before the start of the London Games, the U.S. is without a coach and the situation surrounding Roach is muddled. Joe Zanders was told in February he would be replaced as the Olympic coach. USA Boxing has nominated Basheer Abdullah to replace Zanders, but the nomination is subject to approval by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Pliner was unequivocal in his statement to Rogers that Roach was no longer involved with USA Boxing.

“There is no more involvement,” Pliner said of Roach. “That’s finished. Freddie was never actually going to coach at the Olympics anyway. There was an issue with time. He has a lot going on with his professional fighters and he was away or busy. It was a mutual thing. Obviously, our guys are close to the Olympics so they are right in the middle of their most important preparation time. We are happy with the situation we have in place and our fighters will be ready.”

Roach, though, was surprised when Yahoo! Sports told him Wednesday that Pliner said he was out. Roach, who is known as one of boxing’s squarest shooters, said he is still working with the team and that as far as he knows the team members are planning to work out soon at his Hollywood, Calif.-based Wild Card Gym.

He said he is eager to continue his involvement and that he only had backed off because he felt Zanders didn’t want his help.

“We’ll be back together, as far as I’m concerned,” Roach said. “The previous coach [Zanders] didn’t want my help, so I wasn’t going to force myself on someone who didn’t want me around. But my plan is to help them. I know we just had a good performance at the [Americas] qualifier in Brazil and I want to help the best way I can. I’m available for the new coach, and the guys are supposed to be here [at the Wild Card] so I can work with them some more.”

[Iole Mailbag: Lamont Peterson's explanation of failed test won't change minds]

Bartkowski said Wednesday he was happy with Roach’s work, though he said he wished Roach had more opportunity to coach the amateur fighters.

But Bartkowski said he plans to arrange a telephone call between Roach and Abdullah next week.

“Freddie is not out of the picture yet,” Bartkowski said. “We want to renew the relationship and continue to work together going forward. However, because Freddie has been training Manny Pacquiao and we’ve had a lot of events going on, we haven’t been able to get them together. But I believe we’ll get that done next week and have Freddie talk to Coach Abdullah and hopefully integrate some ideas.”

Six American boxers qualified for the London Games at the Americas tournament last week, giving the U.S. team nine fighters. Roach said he thought the Americans “had a good-looking team,” adding “it looks pretty good that at least three guys” might medal.

The U.S. has won 109 Olympic boxing medals, more than any country, but has been very poor in recent years. In the last five Olympiads – from the 1992 Games in Barcelona through the 2008 Games in Beijing – the U.S. won three golds, one silver and 10 bronzes. The 2008 team was one of the worst performers in U.S. history, with the only medal a bronze won by heavyweight Deontay Wilder.

In the three Olympiads in which the U.S. competed from 1976 through 1988 (the U.S. boycotted the 1980 Games in Moscow), it won 17 golds, five silvers and four bronzes.

Bartkowski, who said he is optimistic the team is on the right track, said the coaching change from Zanders to Abdullah was necessary in order to retain funding from the U.S. Olympic Committee, which had given USA Boxing “performance markers” it was required to hit.

Anthony Bartkowski, the executive director of USA Boxing, was in meetings Wednesday and unavailable for comment. But he released a statement regarding the coaching change in which he said it was done to ensure performance and to maintain funding from the USOC.

“Our goal is to have the best team we can and to start winning medals for our country again,” he said. “We need to do what is right for the athletes and make sure we have a coach who is focused and has an open mind on helping this program to improve.”

Retired boxing champion Eddie Perkins dies

May 17th, 2012

Eddie Perkins, among the best boxers to ever call Chicago home, was World Boxing Council junior welterweight champion and two-time World Boxing Association junior welterweight champion during a 19-year professional career.

In retirement, Mr. Perkins spent a decade mentoring young fighters at Leo High School on the South Side.

Mr. Perkins was “a lovely man,” with a jovial nature that made it hard to envision him as a former world-class pugilist — until he stepped between the ropes, said Leo President Dan McGrath.

“Once he got into the ring, you could tell,” McGrath said. “He was in his element.”

Mr. Perkins, 75, a member of both the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame, died of Alzheimer’s diseaseThursday, May 10, in his home in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood, said his daughter, Lavores Hollingsworth.

A native of Clarksdale, Miss., Mr. Perkins moved to Chicago as a child and settled with his family on the South Side. He graduated from Phillips High School and began boxing professionally in 1956 after compiling a 26-10 amateur record, according to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Mr. Perkins was trained and managed by boxing legend Johnny Coulon, who operated a gym in the 1100 block of East 63rd Street with his wife, Marie. Under Coulon’s tutelage, he trained alongside reigning heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali and became a standout defensive specialist.

Never known as a knockout artist, Mr. Perkins was a guileful puncher who remained elusive well into his 60s while training at Leo, where he would stand in the ring keeping his feet still and deflect punches from young men less than half his age.

“You could stand in front of him and throw punches and not be able to hit him,” said Mike Joyce, Leo boxing coach.

Mr. Perkins won his first WBA title in Milan, Italy, with a 15-round unanimous decision over Duilio Loi in 1962. He lost a rematch with Loi three months later, but would regain the WBA title and win the WBC belt in a unanimous decision over Roberto Cruz In the summer of 1963. He wouldn’t lose another bout until 1965.

Boxing in more than 20 countries, Mr. Perkins often fought on consecutive nights for low pay. He felt he had to train harder than his opponents to gain decisive victories that left no doubt in the minds of judges who were sometimes prejudiced against African-Americans, said Leo graduate Thomas Hayes, Chicago Golden Gloves heavyweight champion in 2001.

“Don’t leave it up to the judges,” Hayes said was the lesson from Mr. Perkins. “And we didn’t.”

Mr. Perkins retired from boxing in 1975 with a career record of 74 wins, 20 losses and two draws, and became a paper branch delivery manager for theChicago Sun-Times. He remained in excellent shape by jogging and bowling, and imparted decades of his championship wisdom inside and outside of the ring.

“A lot of trainers can only tell you,” said retired boxer James Kitchen. “He could put on the gloves and show you.”

Former WBC light heavyweight champion Montell Griffin was a toddler when Mr. Perkins sparred at the Windy City Gym in Lawndale run by Griffin’s father, Clarence. Windy City was previously the same gym owned by Mr. Perkins’ former manager, Coulon.

Griffin, who has won 50 professional fights, said he tells people he’s Chicago’s greatest boxer when asked, and defers only to Mr. Perkins.

“Plain and simple, he’s the best fighter to ever come out of Chicago,” he said.

Mr. Perkins is also survived by his wife of 54 years, Annie; sons Eddie Jr. and Lawrence: a brother, the Rev. Lawrence Perkins; two sisters, Bertha Barton and Elizabeth Carter; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday in Midwest Memorial Chapel, 5040 S. Western Ave., Chicago[. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel

Boxing club opens at Newlands School in Seaford

May 14th, 2012

THE GLOVES were definitely on when youngsters joined a new boxing club which started in Seaford on Tuesday (May 8).

Seaford and Newlands Amateur Boxing Club is based at Newlands School and aims to give youngsters a diversion and hopefully reduce crime and antisocial behaviour.

The club was the idea of Dave Selby, who said: “I am moving to Seaford as I was part of the old boxing club that was located above the library, so I am aware there is a need.

“The aim of the club is to target underprivileged youth in the area and provide a diversionary facility to reduce antisocial behaviour and crime.

“All coaches at the club have passed the relevant boxing coaching courses as set be the Amateur Boxing Association of England and are all CRB checked. The club has strict policies covering child protection, health and safety and equity.

“The vision of the club is to become a well known name in boxing circles, bring back boxing shows to the area and be a focal point for youth in the community.

“I also have the full backing of Newlands School and want to integrate boxing into the school.”

Training sessions are every Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm to 8.30pm for seniors aged 16 plus and cost £3.50 per session or £5 for both sessions. Annual membership is £25.

For juniors, aged ten to 16, training is every Wednesday from 7pm to 8pm at £2.50 per session and annual membership is £15.

Members do not need previous experience of boxing and the club is open to those who just want to keep fit as well as for those who wish to compete.

Three classrooms have been identified for the club and funding is being sought to refurbish the buildings to provide a boxing gym.

All the coaches at the club are volunteers and the club is purely non profit making, with all proceeds going back into the club.

Mr Selby is looking for local people to help buy equipment or a kit sponsor who may want their logo on the kit.
